Australians with loved ones in New Zealand or those traveling to the region should be aware that a powerful 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the South Island, prompting warnings for coastal residents to stay clear of the water.
New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency has advised people in the Southland and Fiordland regions to avoid beaches and marine areas due to the risk of strong and unpredictable currents.
Marine Warning Issued Authorities have urged boat owners, live-aboards, and marina residents to immediately leave their vessels and move to shore. “Do not return to boats unless instructed by officials,” the agency stressed.
The earthquake, which occurred on Tuesday, was felt by over 4,700 people, according to Geonet, New Zealand’s seismic monitoring service. Local media have reported swaying buildings and household items being knocked over.
Details of the Quake Geonet confirmed the earthquake struck at a depth of 33km (21 miles), approximately 160km (99 miles) northwest of Snares Islands, part of New Zealand’s sub-Antarctic region. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) initially recorded the quake as magnitude 7 but later revised it to 6.7, with a shallower depth of about 10km (6 miles).
One resident described the tremors on social media, saying, “We had things fall off shelves. The outdoor wooden table was dancing.”
Tsunami Risk? Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands, or territories.
New Zealand sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a vast 40,000km (24,854-mile) zone of seismic activity responsible for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. While this latest event caused significant tremors, no major damage or injuries have been reported so far.
Australians traveling to or with family in New Zealand should stay updated on any emergency developments.
