Aldi is shaking up the Australian grocery game by announcing a long-anticipated move into online grocery delivery — a space traditionally dominated by supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths. But as the German discount supermarket launches this new service, experts are cautioning Aussie shoppers not to assume it’ll be the same budget-friendly experience they’re used to in-store.

Aldi Teams Up with DoorDash for Delivery

In a strategic move, Aldi has partnered with DoorDash to bring groceries straight to customers' doors. The trial has officially kicked off in Canberra, with plans to gradually expand across Australia in the coming months. This announcement marks Aldi’s first foray into online grocery delivery in the Australian market, despite years of speculation about when — or if — it would ever take the plunge.

More than 1,800 products are now available through the DoorDash platform, including pantry staples, fresh fruit and veg, meat, dairy, seafood, bread, snacks, and other household essentials. Customers will be able to order directly through the DoorDash app or website and have groceries delivered to their homes without ever stepping foot in a store.

However, there’s a twist that shoppers need to be aware of.

Price Differences Apply — And Fees Too

While Aldi is known for its ultra-competitive prices, those shopping through the delivery service may find their final bill is a bit higher than expected. Aldi has confirmed there will be some “price variances” between items ordered online and those purchased in-store. In addition, DoorDash will apply its own delivery and service fees on top of the grocery bill.

Angus Kidman, a money expert at Finder, told Yahoo Finance the move is a smart one for Aldi, but it does come with trade-offs.

“Aldi has always prided itself on being the cheapest supermarket in Australia, and part of how they achieve that is by running a lean operation with minimal extras,” Kidman explained. “They’ve consistently said they wouldn’t enter the online grocery delivery space on their own because the costs would eat into their low-price model.”

Partnering with DoorDash, however, allows Aldi to sidestep those costs. There’s no need for Aldi to hire delivery drivers, build an in-house logistics network, or add the tech infrastructure that Coles and Woolies have developed over years.

“This way, Aldi can still offer delivery for the growing number of customers who expect that service without compromising its low-cost structure,” Kidman said. “It’s a logical move, especially since they’ve already tested this partnership in the US market since 2023.”

What This Means for Aussie Shoppers

Aldi’s Chief Commercial Officer, Jordan Lack, said the partnership is a reflection of the supermarket’s ongoing mission to offer high-quality groceries at the lowest possible price to Australian families — a goal Aldi has focused on since entering the Australian market in 2001.

“Through our partnership with DoorDash, we can now literally deliver on this mission directly to Aussies’ doorsteps in an exciting new way that we know our customers have been seeking,” Lack said.

The move is particularly significant given the rising cost of living pressures being felt by households across Australia. According to Finder, the average Aussie household is now spending $233 a week on groceries as of June 2025 — up 27 per cent from $184 a year ago.

With grocery bills climbing, the ability to access Aldi’s lower prices from home could be appealing to many. However, shoppers are being urged to do their homework. That price advantage may not be as pronounced once DoorDash fees and online price variations are factored in.

Aldi Remains Australia’s Cheapest Grocer

Aldi’s reputation for value is well-earned. In CHOICE’s government-funded supermarket price survey, Aldi continues to come out on top. The latest figures from March showed a basket of common grocery items cost $55.35 at Aldi, compared to $58.92 at Woolworths, $59.22 at Coles, and a whopping $69.74 at IGA (not accounting for specials).

These figures highlight just how competitive Aldi is — particularly on everyday staples. The big question now is whether that competitive edge will carry over to the delivery experience.

For budget-conscious Australians, it will be important to compare the in-app prices with what they would usually pay in-store. In many cases, convenience might come at a slight premium.

DoorDash vs. Traditional Delivery Services

DoorDash has become a popular delivery platform in Australia, best known for restaurant and takeaway orders. Expanding into grocery delivery, particularly with a brand like Aldi, is part of its broader push to become a one-stop shop for household needs.
