According to Red Sea Governor Amr Hanafy, a total of 45 passengers were on board the Sindbad submarine at the time of the accident. The passengers included individuals from Russia, India, Norway, and Sweden, along with five Egyptians.
All six victims were Russian nationals, including two children. A Russian official in Hurghada, Viktor Voropaev, confirmed the deaths, while authorities in the Russian republic of Tatarstan revealed that two of the deceased were married doctors. Initially, the Russian embassy in Egypt stated that all tourists on board were Russian.
Purpose of the Submarine Tour
The Sindbad submarine had been operating as a tourist vessel for several years. Managed by Sindbad Submarines, the company offers underwater excursions for visitors to explore coral reefs near Hurghada.
According to the company's website, it operates two of the world’s only 14 recreational submarines, each designed to accommodate 44 passengers and two pilots. The tours cater to both adults and children, allowing them to dive up to 25 meters (82 feet) below the surface to experience marine life.
