Scottie Scheffler Claims US PGA Championship in Dominant Style

Scottie Scheffler has added another major title to his impressive golfing resume, overcoming a spirited challenge from Jon Rahm to win his maiden US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. The 28-year-old American, who already boasts two Masters titles from 2022 and 2024, demonstrated his trademark resilience and mental toughness to secure the victory by five strokes.

Early Pressure and a Close Battle

Heading into the final round, Scheffler held a three-shot lead over his rivals, including the rejuvenated Rahm, who started five strokes back. Despite this advantage, the day’s outcome was far from certain. Rahm, a former world number one and major champion himself, quickly erased the deficit with a burst of birdies around the turn, turning the final round into a gripping head-to-head showdown.

Scheffler’s front nine was shaky, allowing Rahm to draw level midway through the round. However, as Rahm faltered over the closing holes, Scheffler found his rhythm, posting crucial birdies on the 10th, 14th, and 15th to rebuild his lead. This late surge allowed him to cruise down the 18th with the title effectively in his grasp.

A Poignant Victory

Scheffler, known for his calm demeanour, couldn't hold back his emotions as he walked down the 18th fairway. Tears filled his eyes as he soaked in the magnitude of his third major victory. His animated celebrations after sinking the winning putt highlighted just how much this win meant to him.

"I knew it was going to be a challenging day," Scheffler reflected after the win. "Finishing off a major championship is always difficult, and I did a good job of staying patient on the front nine. I didn't play my best stuff, but I kept myself in it, stepped up on the back nine, and had a good nine holes."

Rahm’s Late Stumble

Rahm’s hopes of a third major title unravelled on the treacherous final stretch known as the 'Green Mile'. A bogey on the 16th, followed by a disastrous tee shot into the water on the par-three 17th, led to a double-bogey, effectively ending his challenge. Another two dropped shots on the 18th left him tied for eighth, a disappointing finish after coming so close to challenging Scheffler’s lead.

Strong Performances from the Chasers

While Scheffler and Rahm dominated the spotlight, other notable performances were worth mentioning. Bryson DeChambeau continued his strong major form, finishing in a tie for second alongside fellow Americans Davis Riley and Harris English, who shot a brilliant six-under 65 to climb the leaderboard.

Rory McIlroy, playing his first major since completing the career Grand Slam at the Masters in April, carded a final-round 72 to finish three over par, tied for 47th. Defending champion Xander Schauffele ended his tournament one under, squeezing into the top 30 after a final round 68.

Scheffler’s Rapid Rise

Scheffler’s victory marks his 15th PGA Tour win in just three years and 94 days since his first, making him the third fastest to reach that milestone behind only Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. His ability to maintain composure under pressure and bounce back from early setbacks sets him apart as one of the most formidable players of his generation.

Rahm Remains a Threat Despite Setback

Despite the disappointment, Rahm can take solace in his strong showing. Since joining LIV at the end of 2023, his form in majors had been under scrutiny. This week’s performance at Quail Hollow, where he genuinely threatened for the title, will go a long way toward silencing those critics.

"There's been a lot of good happening this week and a lot of positive feelings to take for the rest of the year," Rahm said after his round. "It’s the first time I've been this close to winning a major and not gotten it done, but I’m proud of the fight I put up."

Looking Ahead

With this victory, Scheffler solidifies his position at the pinnacle of golf. He will no doubt be aiming to add even more major titles to his collection as the 2025 season progresses, while Rahm will be looking to bounce back stronger in the remaining majors this year.
