Tragedy in the Skies: Former Drummer of The Devil Wears Prada Dies in Fiery US Plane Crash
May 23, 2025 Mitchell News

In a deeply tragic incident that’s rocked the music and entertainment world, former drummer of Christian metal band The Devil Wears Prada, Daniel Williams, has died in a plane crash in the United States. Williams, along with respected talent agent Dave Shapiro and at least two others, perished when a private Cessna jet went down in a residential area of San Diego, California.

The crash occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, US Pacific time, with the aircraft erupting into a fireball that caused widespread devastation in a military housing neighbourhood.

A Chilling Final Post

Hours before the tragic accident, Williams posted a haunting image of himself at the controls of the Cessna 550 jet on Instagram. The photo, showing him in the cockpit, was captioned: “Here we gooooo.”

In another eerie post, Williams shared a close-up of the plane’s control panel, with the caption: “Hey. Hey … you … look at me … I’m the (co)pilot now.” The light-hearted reference to the famous quote from the film Captain Phillips now seems chillingly prophetic.

Also tagged in the posts was Dave Shapiro, 42, a veteran music agent who not only owned the aircraft but had once worked with Williams during his tenure in The Devil Wears Prada.

Crash Details and Devastation

According to US media reports, the Cessna 550 jet departed from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey late on Wednesday night (local time) and made a fuel stop in Wichita, Kansas, before continuing its journey to Southern California.

Tragically, the plane never made it to its final destination—San Diego’s Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport. Instead, it crashed around 4am Pacific time, approximately two miles from the runway. The aircraft came down in a residential area managed by Liberty Military Housing, which provides accommodation for military families.

The fiery crash destroyed 15 homes and several vehicles, with eight people sustaining injuries, some serious. Emergency crews battled thick fog and heavy flames in their efforts to rescue survivors and contain the blaze.

Tributes Pour In

The loss of Williams and Shapiro has been met with an outpouring of grief and tributes from the global music community.

The Devil Wears Prada acknowledged the heartbreaking news with an emotional post on Instagram, featuring a photo montage of Williams and Shapiro. The caption simply read: “No words. We owe you everything. Love you forever.”

Dave Shapiro’s employer, Sound Talent Group (STG), also confirmed his death in a public statement. “We are devastated by the loss of our co-founder, colleague, and friend,” a spokesperson said. “Our hearts go out to their families and everyone impacted by today’s tragedy. Thank you for respecting their privacy at this time.”

It was later reported that at least two other STG employees were on board the flight and also lost their lives.

A Legacy in Music and Aviation

Shapiro was more than just a music agent—he was a central figure in the North American alternative and rock music scene, helping shape the careers of numerous artists. He co-founded STG and worked with high-profile acts including The Devil Wears Prada, Motionless in White, and A Day to Remember.

Beyond music, Shapiro was an avid aviator with more than 15 years of flying experience. He was also a certified flight instructor and was known to combine his professional and personal passions by piloting himself to business meetings and events.

Williams, meanwhile, had been a beloved figure in the metalcore scene. Known for his explosive drumming and engaging live performances, he played a key role in shaping the early sound of The Devil Wears Prada. Since leaving the band, he had remained active in the music industry, occasionally touring and collaborating with other artists.

Industry Mourns

News of the crash quickly circulated among musicians and industry veterans, many of whom took to social media to share their condolences and memories.

Terrance Coughlin, a respected music executive, wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Rest in Peace Dave Shapiro, Daniel Williams, and everyone on that flight. Some of my very first shows were booked through Dave. I had a handful of shows with Daniel—always a pleasure to see him play. Gone way too soon.”

Musicians across the globe echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the professionalism and kindness both men were known for.

Australian Connection to a Global Tragedy

While the crash happened thousands of kilometres away, it has struck a chord with many in Australia’s tight-knit music community. Australian fans of The Devil Wears Prada, a band that toured Down Under several times, were quick to share their heartbreak online.

Many promoters and venue operators in Australia had worked with Shapiro or his agency over the years, particularly during international tours. “Dave was instrumental in bringing big acts to Aussie stages,” one Melbourne-based promoter posted online. “He understood our market and believed in Australian audiences.”

Aviation Safety Concerns Raised

The crash has reignited discussions about private aviation safety, especially among those who frequently fly for work. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the incident, with initial reports citing poor visibility due to fog as a potential contributing factor.

While the Cessna 550 has a solid safety record, experts say the complexity of night flying in dense fog near populated areas presents significant challenges, even for experienced pilots.

Remembering Two Icons

As the investigation continues, the music world is left mourning the loss of two influential figures. Daniel Williams and Dave Shapiro may have come from different corners of the industry—one a performer, the other a behind-the-scenes powerhouse—but both left lasting legacies that touched thousands.

In the words of one fan: “They gave us the soundtrack to our youth and the shows we’ll never forget. Rest easy, legends.”
